Bella Italia, Italy through the eyes of an Artist by Pat Fiorello

Pat Fiorello has been teaching painting at Il Chiostro for several years.  This book contains over 80 of her paintings of Italy, including many from places which will be familiar to Il Chiostro alumni:  Lake Garda, Tuscany, Florence, Siena, and Venice.

Fiorello invites readers on an irresistible visual journey to share in her most vibrant memories of Italy—its grandeur and splendid views of sparkling blue lakes, breathtaking hilltops, quaint villages and sunlit gardens. Because of her reverence for exquisite light and color, the works of art emanating from Fiorello’s easel beckon viewers to open their eyes more fully, and to breathe in all the enchanting sights—near and far—that the world has to offer.

Sun in the Village of Volpaia

In this lesson, we’ll learn how to translate what might be a complex and detailed scene into a simplified design with a strong foundation for a painting.

We’ll be painting a street scene from one of Pat’s favorite spots in Tuscany, the charming village of Volpaia. We’ll be learning about massing value shapes together, suggesting detail without overstating it and conveying a strong sense of light and shadow.

As usual we’ll be doing a paint along of the scene and brief critique. Enjoy a fun afternoon in sunny Tuscany. No passport required.

Painting will focus on achieving convincing form and depth, rich, clean color and expressive brushwork.

What students from Pat’s past zoom classes had to say…

Another great class today. You really have strong teaching skills. I learned a LOT. The full hour allocated to critiques at the back end of your classes is so helpful. Your lessons sink in so well when you can point to examples of issues on someone’s canvas, but you also teach how to correct. And you are always very complimentary and talk about the positives as well.  ~ SG

It was fun! You are the best teacher ever! Thank you so much, time goes by so fast in your classes because they’re so engaging!   ~AW

Great class!! Wow, I am totally inspired after your watercolor class, Pat.  Your instructions are always so clear and easy to understand.  I was in such a low energy, down mood before we started.  Now I’m happy and I feel like myself again.  Art truly does take us to another place where our entire focus is needed.   – MD
