Learn the craft of songwriting with industry legends Amanda McBroom and Michele Brourman

Amanda and Michele have written hundreds of songs for themselves, other celebrities, theater and film.

Every song – and every songwriter – is unique.  There are no formulas for writing a good song – but there is craft that we can learn, adopt, and adapt to our own musical gifts and purpose.

What is it we want to say in a song? And how can we say that in the simplest, most effective way?

How do we drill down into our own emotions, find the right language to express it?

How do we bring the “Creator” on board and get the “Critic” out of the way?  And when do we invite the critic back into the room with us to hone whatever we’ve just written?

In this class, we’ll focus on the art and craft of songwriting:

  • How to use words effectively
  • How to support those words with our melodic and harmonic choices,
  • How to understand and use structure without being restricted by it
  • What are the “rules” – and how/when should we break them?

Who should take this workshop:  anyone who wants to learn how to write effective and entertaining songs. It is for songwriters of all experience levels, those who are  just starting or changing genres, or professionals who want to sharpen their focus.

Amanda and Michele have been making songs for decades, writing for theatre, television, film and for numerous recording artists.  They will help you to up your skill set – and tap into your own unique musical wellspring.  Check each of their websites for a complete list of their accomplishments:

Class structure:

The 4-week workshop is limited to 6 songwriters.

We will ask for an initial mp3 with one or two songs you have created to be sent prior to the first class.

Each student will receive a maximum of 15 minutes with Amanda and Michele in each class.  The instructors will analyze the initial submission (s) and offer suggestions of musical and lyrical structure.
Students can then take those suggestions home and re-submit new mp3s with improvements at the next lesson. Some classes may also include subject assignment for the later classes.
Songs do not have to be heavily produced! Simple piano/vocal or guitar /vocal will be fine.

The instructors request that submissions avoid the HIP HOP or  RAP genres, as those are not their area of expertise.
