Bella Italia, Italy through the eyes of an Artist by Pat Fiorello

Pat Fiorello has been teaching painting at Il Chiostro for several years.  This book contains over 80 of her paintings of Italy, including many from places which will be familiar to Il Chiostro alumni:  Lake Garda, Tuscany, Florence, Siena, and Venice.

Fiorello invites readers on an irresistible visual journey to share in her most vibrant memories of Italy—its grandeur and splendid views of sparkling blue lakes, breathtaking hilltops, quaint villages and sunlit gardens. Because of her reverence for exquisite light and color, the works of art emanating from Fiorello’s easel beckon viewers to open their eyes more fully, and to breathe in all the enchanting sights—near and far—that the world has to offer.

How to capture the essence of Roses in oils
Join Pat Fiorello, an instructor who has led more than 10 programs with Il Chiostro since 2008, for a paint-along session where you’ll learn to paint the world’s favorite flower – roses!
Here are some highlights of the class:
  • When painting roses (or anything) we are painting shapes of color that when seen in the context of the painting communicate something that we read as a rose.
  • First and foremost, we need to understand the shape of the flowers
  • Then we need to understand the architecture of the rose, it’s form- where the light falls, where the shadow shapes are.
  • The  deep center of a rose is usually warmer, darker and more chromatic, even may have some small shapes of dark accents. Also look for other form or cast shadows on the rose where no light is hitting the rose.
  • We are always painting shapes of color, so squint and see the shapes of the light and paint those on top of the dark. Simplify!
Here’s a 7 minute video that I think will give you some good instruction on how the simplify roses to capture their essence without getting lost in the details:

Comments from from Pat’s Chianti’s Charm class:

Another great class today. You really have strong teaching skills. I learned a LOT. The full hour allocated to critiques at the back end of your classes is so helpful. Your lessons sink in so well when you can point to examples of issues on someone’s canvas, but you also teach how to correct. And you are always very complimentary and talk about the positives as well.  ~ SG

It was fun! You are the best teacher ever! Thank you so much, time goes by so fast in your classes because they’re so engaging!   ~AW
