More about Howard…

HFriedland-Painting in VeniceArtist’s Statement: “The challenge for me is always to see the world with fresh eyes and respond spontaneously to the beauty before me. It’s possible to lose the impact of my initial vision out of doors due to the continually changing light. For this reason I strive to capture as quickly and accurately as possible the visual sensations that I have of the subject. I study the color relationships and try to note them as best as I can. Back at my studio I use these “on the spot” studies for larger paintings. I also take some photos for additional information, however I’m careful not to copy the photograph (too much information could dilute my first impression). Therefore, I also have to rely on my memory to recall the mood that I wanted to express. Some painters prefer to render a picture tightly to a literal level of finish. However I prefer to paint only enough for the viewer to get a clear vision of what the subject is and suggest the rest. When the painting is viewed close up you can see the many colorful brush strokes, as you step further away the brush strokes disappear and your eye pulls the whole painting together. That is what the magic of painting is about for me. This allows the viewer to use his or her imagination and participate in the painting”.

Get Ready to Travel Again!
This is a 3-part series for oils

Whether you have already been over to “Bella Italia”, or have only seen photos of Italy’s most iconic places, you now have the opportunity to learn to paint some of them.

In my 3-week Zoom class I will lecture with a visual presentation and demonstrate how you can get the authentic flavor of Italy into your paintings.

Due to the current travel restrictions, for now we’ll all have to settle for a virtual trip to Italy. It’s the next best thing until we can all be together in the evening to toast with a glass of Italian wine, to a day of exhilarating painting.

Who knows, maybe after painting The Duomo in Florence or the  Gondolas on the Grand Canal in Venice you’ll have the urge to join us in Italy for a painting trip of a lifetime. Fantastico!!

Class Format:

In this 3-part series, Howard will demo setting up and beginning painting the selected scene.  He will be open to questions and comments from the students throughout this demo.  The class will be recorded and sent to each student so they can begin their own painting during the week.  They can paint from the same scene Howard used or their own source material.  Students should email their painting to Howard before the start of the next class for a group critique.  After the critique, in the second class Howard will demonstrate finishing his painting, adding all the special highlights to make the painting come alive.  Students will once again receive the recording from which they can complete their own paintings.  Those should be emailed to Howard for the group critique and discussion in the third class.  If time allows, Howard will continue to discuss how to add drama to your paintings for that ultimate impact.

Class Dates: 3 Mondays,  April 19, 26 & May 3

Time:  4pm Eastern Time (That is 3 pm Central time, 2 pm Mountain time and 1 pm Pacific time)

Class Length:  2 hours, including critique

Price:  $180 for 3 sessions or $70 for a single class.
