Il Chiostro Special Programs

The 2017 Il Chiostro Art Exhibit in NY – The HeArt of Italy

Il Chiostro Upside Down: Season One
South Africa

Water reflection

Zorgvliet Wine Estate in South Africa

For our first program, scheduled for early 2017, we have chosen the Cape Town-Stellenbosch region, located at the lower tip of the remarkable African continent.  With 53 million inhabitants, 11 official languages, and deliciously indigenous cuisines, art, music and literature, the rainbow nation of South Africa is one of the most diverse nations on Earth. With a Mediterranean climate, surrounded by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, majestic mountain ranges and sweeping plains, it is truly one of the most visually stunning areas of the world.

We are certain that South Africa is the perfect place to start our new adventure.

Designed similar to our popular annual Autumn Arts Festival in Tuscany, this will be a 10-day program based at a local winery during their harvest time.  We will take over the Cape-Dutch style Zorgvliet Country Lodge situated on the Zorgvliet Wine Estates, about an hour outside of colorful, bustling Cape Town – the most convenient point of entry.

As at Dievole, the entire active winery will be ours exclusively. We’ve invited some of our long-time alumni instructors to begin this special new adventure with us.  Participants can choose one of the following workshops:

Il Chiostro – Upside Down!

Logo-Upside Down-rectangleOur latest adventure in art workshops will take us to the other side of the world.  For 18 years we have been producing our Autumn Arts Festival at the Dievole winery in Tuscany.  Starting in March 2017, we are taking that autumn festival and flipping it:  the same arts and culture program but in wine-producing countries in the southern hemisphere where March is their “autumn” harvest.

We will offer the same array of arts workshops as in Tuscany:  painting, photography and cooking, interspersed with cultural excursions designed to introduce us to local art, history, and traditions.

We’re very excited about our developing schedule for Il Chiostro – Upside Down:

  • March 2017 – Cape Town & the Stellenbosch wine region of South Africa (see details above)
  • March 2018 – Argentina & the wine area of Mendoza
  • March 2019 – New Zealand
  • March 2020 – Chile

To those who have experienced Il Chiostro’s Adventures in Italy over these past two decades, we hope you’ll now join our new chapter of arts & travel adventures – this time, upside down!

LMM-cropAfter 20 years in Italy, we decided it was time to branch out a little.  Il Chiostro – Upside Down is meant to be the same as our regular programs, but at wine estates in the southern hemisphere.  These programs will be in March each year when they harvest the grapes and prepare all the foods for the winter.

For our first program of the series we have chosen the gorgeous wine region of South Africa called Stellenbosch, just outside of Cape Town.  We will offer painting, photography and food and wine programs with all the typical excursions designed to introduce our guests to the local culture, cuisine and history.

We, along with our instructors, will be present throughout this new adventure to accompany you on excursions and discover these rich new areas.  Read below for more details about South Africa.        — Michael and Linda
