Simplifying Landscape Imagery
Simplifying landscape imagery will be the focus of this seven-day art making workshop held at the Tuscan Renaissance Center in the heart of Italy’s Chianti country.
Under the guidance of Woodstock’s award winning painter and printmaker Kate McGloughlin, guests will spend mornings quietly studying the design mastery of Tuscany’s rolling hills during the height of its magnificent harvest season. By learning to make meaningful sketchbook drawings and color studies, workshop participants will strengthen the design of their paintings with Kate’s 3-step method to simplifying the landscape.
Throughout the week, guests will also have the opportunity to use the printmaking press to translate their compositions into monotypes and other one-of-a-kind prints. No prior experience is necessary--come as you are and Kate will help you get to the essence of your work making painterly prints.
This workshop welcomes beginning artists as well as seasoned veterans. Come with us and take advantage of this time away to create in an open, noncompetitive atmosphere with a group of like- minded people in an amazingly rich, inspirational setting.
During the week we will organize optional visits to Siena and other hilltowns like Radda or San Gimignano, so you can paint the area from varous perspectives.
Activities: Our daily schedule will always involve painting and siteseeing adventures such as:
- visiting medieval Siena to sketch, take photos, wander and shop
- tasting the wine that is growing all about us on a tour of a local Chianti winery
- exploring other small hilltowns (Radda, Volpaia, ...) to paint on location or just relax at a cafe
- hiking through the vineyards, olive groves and villages
We`ll use our restored monastery as a home base, returning each evening for a home-made Tuscan meal and good company. Stay with the group or go off on your own. Our purpose is to paint, explore and enjoy the beauty of Italy.

Food: While in Tuscany, the group will have it`s own private chef for the week. At Il Chiostro, the food experience is very important to us. We want everyone to be exposed to the delicious simplicity of authentic Tuscan food, which includes plenty of fresh vegetables, meats, pasta, risotto, fruits, local herbs, and desserts like panforte and tiramisu. Breakfast and dinner are served in the dining room daily. Local wine (Chianti) is included with dinner. Lunches are independent. There are many opportunities for eating in the village, picnics or on excursions.
About Your Il Chiostro Hosts: Linda and Michael, who will be hosting your San Fedele program, have been organizing workshops in Italy since 1995. You can read more about them by following the About Il Chiostro link. The owners of San Fedele, Nicolo and Renata, live on site. They will be available throughout the program to talk about the history of the monastery, the renovation and this area of Tuscany they call home.
