Travel Photography in the Digital Age
with Howard Millard
May 10-17, 2008
Price: $1,695

Program Description:

The hallmark of great travel photography is that it creates the emotional experience of being there. Our goal during this week is to capture a vital sense of place, and portray the unique qualities of the people we meet and the culture we experience. Would you like to see first hand how a professional travel photographer plans and shoots a magazine assignment today? What approaches work best for personal expression and the fine art world?

During this week-long workshop in the verdant and atmospheric hills of Tuscany, you will learn techniques to make stunning travel photographs for personal, editorial and fine art use. Our emphasis will be on shooting and processing digitally. You will receive personal, hands-on instruction from a working photographer to help you refine your personal vision, maximize your photographic and digital skills, and energize and stimulate your image-making process.

Here in Tuscany you'll frame ethereal landscapes at dawn, medieval hilltop towns glowing in late afternoon light, and bustling markets and piazzas. You'll learn both general and specialized travel and digital photography techniques, including:

  • Photographing people, architecture, interiors, and landscapes
  • Nurturing your own personal style
  • How to approach people in a foreign culture to photograph them naturally
  • Going beyond the icons, creating dynamic travel compositions, taking advantage of lens focal length
  • Natural and artificial light, color balance, using flash so it doesn't look like flash, equipment and how to transport it
  • Shooting in low light and at night
  • Working with memory cards, downloading, backing up and archiving
  • How to make creative photographs under any circumstances
  • Using Adobe Photoshop (or other image-editing software) to review, edit, correct, refine and enhance your images
  • Logistics, customs, visas, research and planning, x-ray inspection for the traveling photographer
  • Printing options including working with labs and making your own archival inkjet prints on fine art papers.

Presentations drawn from magazine assignments and exhibitions will provide a springboard for student assignments and critiques. Each day we will have a new opportunity to shoot in the hill towns and the spectacular landscapes of classic Tuscany. We will explore new photographic techniques and approaches in each session. Then we will have time to process our images, review and critique with the group.

After a hearty breakfast, we set out for our new desination(s) and photograph for usually four to six hours or more a day. Then we return to download, edit, and review the day's images. Throughout the week, Howard will be making slideshow presentations and demonstrating techniques in the field. He'll be with you shooting and happy to answer any questions you might have.

All skill levels are welcome. You'll need to bring your own digital camera and know how to operate it. For downloading, reviewing, and working with images, you'll need a laptop and memory card reader.
