with the Hearty Boys

Program Description:

Maybe you’ve seen them on national TV or maybe you have a copy of their cookbook Talk with Your Mouth Full - but neither one compares to actually experiencing a cooking class with Dan Smith and Steve McDonagh, popularly known as The Hearty Boys.

The combination of being in Italy and their inimitable style of teaching cooking techniques and original recipes is a perfect recipe for culture, culinary adventure and a lot of fun!

Spend a week in beautiful Tuscany with Dan and Steve and discover how to create simple flavor filled dishes in true Italian style. Through a series of lecture/demos and hands-on classes, experience their philosophies of accessible entertaining and deceptively easy recipes that will enable you to bring back to your home ideas to recreate your Italian experience.

All you have to bring is a love of food and an adventurous spirit!

Some of the week's highlights:

We will visit an open air market in Poggibonsi and purchase the best that the market has to offer and use it to create our own Tuscan feast.
An excursion to a local family-run goat cheese maker who uses only the best and freshest ingredients and an old world authentic philosophy.
Visit San Gimignano where we'll taste different quality balsamic vinegars at a specialty bottega (shop).
Lecture with the Hearty Boys about what makes quality olive oil; includes an olive oil tasting
Learn to make fresh pasta
Prepare Dan’s favorite recipes from Talk with Your Mouth Full
Wine tour and tasting at a local Chianti Classico vineyard
Excursion to medieval Siena
1/2 day excursions to intimate Tuscan hill towns
Nature walk through the vineyards and valley
Finish the week by creating a catered experience for all participants with the Hearty Boys-Italian style.

For friends or partners who want to come along, but are not interested in cooking, there will also be a photography workshop offered during this same week. Check the listings for details.

About the Instructors:

The Hearty Boys was born in our eight-by-eight-foot Chicago kitchen. We had a vision when we moved to Chicago; we wanted to take all the knowledge we had accumulated and bring an East Coast sensibility to the Windy City. And Chicagoans were ready to listen. They started to look to us for hip, urban parties, and reporters called for tips on their upcoming entertainment articles.

Our success quickly enabled us to move out of the apartment kitchen and open a gourmet shop in the "Boystown" neighborhood on Chicago's north side. We served an ever-changing array of foods—all of which we created on the spot each morning. The Hearty Boys continued to grow happily and steadily…and then we hit the summer of 2005. We sent a tape into Food Network and beat out 10,000 entrants to become The Next Food Network Star; we launched our own show, Party Line with The Hearty Boys and opened our first restaurant, HB. In October of 2007, The Hearty Boys Cookbook Talk with Your Mouth Full gave further opportunities to use our "accidental expertise."
