Juror`s Statement:

It was a great honor to be asked to jury the “Shades of Italy” exhibition for Il Chiostro. I was excited to see the variety and originality of the work submitted by the artists who had taken workshops between 1995-2008. I now believe that by leaving one’s daily hectic lifestyle to travel to a region known for its beauty and love of life can inspire and add to or unearth one’s creativity.

In the jurying process, the criteria I chose for selecting artworks was that the pieces should be emblematic of the theme of the show, be of high quality and have a slightly different interpretation such as an unusual vantage point, interpretation of subject matter or color palette. By capturing a different moment of a traditional Italian scene such as the canals of Venice, the hillsides of Tuscany, a welcoming café or the colorful vineyards; the viewer’s curiosity is engaged. The work chosen was not just technically competent but also compelling in some way that gives the viewer an opportunity to contemplate the color, shapes, tastes and smells of the essence of Italy.

Whether the medium was painting, collage, photography or sculpture; or the subject matter was captured through abstraction or realism, the artworks chosen are not just technically proficient, but also have a certain sensibility or wit that provokes and engages the viewer.

About the Juror:

Geneen Estrada - The founder and business owner of Estrada Fine Art, in Los Angeles, Geneen studied painting and art history in Northern California before moving to New York in 1979.  She soon made a name for herself among her contemporaries and in the 1980s her works were included in selected exhibitions at 55 Mercer Gallery, Painting Space 122 and the Westbeth Gallery. She continued to paint and exhibit during her tenure in the corporate world of entertainment. As the millennium approached, Geneen moved back to California to pursue her dream of bringing art into people’s lives. Inspired by her love of the arts, and the work of Betty Parsons, the artist, dealer and collector who championed the work of many artists, Geneen opened Estrada Fine Art in 2005. In so doing she realized her dream of establishing a conduit for the vast bodies of artwork by many excellent mid-career artists, gaining exposure for them with discerning art collectors.
