Juror's
Statement :
My assignment was, again this year, to select 80 images from around
300 submissions of artist work created as a result of participation
in an Il Chiostro program. While last year's artists were primarily
focused upon painting characteristic aspects of the landscape in the
various workshop locations, this year's submissions took many more liberties
both with subject and material. The blend of the artist's personal vista
with that of the Italian surroundings which distinguished the selections
I made for last year's exhibition was hard to miss among the entirety
of this year's entries.
The addition of photography and mixed medium work this year, together
with painting, makes the journey around Italy that much more exciting.
Because I was able to view a large group of images together this time,
my excitement about the way artists' works cross-referenced influenced
my selections. I loved seeing an image in paint and then recognizing
a different take on the same subject in photography or collage. While
utilizing the particular pleasures of each medium, Il Chiostro artists
mixed invention with a deep respect for their Italian subjects. The
resulting work is playful and filled with the pleasure of seeing.
