Design in Wax
Program Description: This intensive workshop will take place will take place in the city famous for art for centuries - the cradle of the Italian Renaissance. You will walk the same streets as Michelangelo, Leonardo, Botticelli, Raphael, Filippo Lippi, Brancaccio, and many others. During our week we will focus on allowing ourselves the freedom to explore new designs while being inspired by the rich culture, architecture, beauty and history of the city. In keeping with its old-world history, we will work more freely by using simple hand tools to carve out wax models, while foregoing any high tech tools typically found in a modern day studio. We will have plenty of time to be inspired by the art of Siena and Florence.
Activities: In addition to the jewelry workshop with Fred, some of the other activities will be:
About the Instructor: Fred de Vos has been teaching jewelry design for over 20 years. Predominantly self-taught, Fred began developing his technical skills as a small boy in his father's machine shop in his native Holland. He attended technical schools in Holland and Canada before moving to New York City in the 1960s to study at the renowned Art Students League.Fred honed his fine skills as a studio assistant in the craft world; first to a sculptor, then a harpsichord maker, and eventually as a leather sandal maker, before discovering his true calling - jewelry making.During his initial effort to explore the craft of jewelry making Fred acquired a modest collection of tools, a week later he was selling his own designs. Fred's work caught the attention of a leading jewelry designer Ed Wiener, who quickly hired him as an assistant. Fred stayed on for 18 years, but in the meantime he began to impart his unique talents to others by teaching at the Parsons School of Design. In 1994, Fred realized a longtime dream when he opened his own workshop and soon began attracting students from all walks of life. This will be Fred's 5th workshop with Il Chiostro. Setting & Accommodations: For the week we will be staying at the Residenza Michelangiolo along the Viale Michelangiolo in the quieter Oltr'arno section of Florence. This is a recently renovated private palazzo on a tree-lined residential street near the Arno. The owner still manages the property and makes each person feel like a guest of his family. There are only 11 rooms - large, exquisite, each with new bathroom and kitchenette. A continental Italian breakfast of rolls and coffee can be enjoyed in your room, or we will walk to the bar on the corner to have a cappuccino with the other locals heading off to work.
