Digital Photography in Florence
with Dan Lipow
October 4-11, 2008
Price: $2,250

Program Description:

Digital photography gives you the ability to capture the imagery you want more easily than ever before, but it also requires even experienced photographers to learn new techniques and methods. This week-long workshop, for those with a basic working knowledge of digital photography, provides hands-on instruction from a working photographer in the vibrant, photogenic setting of Florence. Combining real-world experience with theory, the course will help you learn how to maximize digital technology, improving your results while revitalizing your image-making process.

In this workshop, you will learn both general and specialized digital photography techniques. Topics will include:

• travel -shooting techniques that help to capture a sense of place
• understanding light, color, and color balance
• resolution and file-management issues
• various methods of utilizing digital technology to achieve the photographic results you desire.
• *** image-editing software is your new darkroom ***
• course lessons will also include a discussion of issues and techniques using Adobe Photoshop (or other image-editing software) that are complementary to the day’s photographic topic. (RAW files, basic retouching and image enhancement, image adjustment layers, layer masks, histograms, etc.)

To let you capture the best light, each day’s course meeting will follow independent shooting in the early morning hours. After more shooting in the late afternoon, we’ll review the day’s images together each evening. Dan will also be available for individual consultation during independent shooting hours. There will be several organized outings.

Course Requirements:

Your own digital camera and laptop are required for downloading and working with your images (please bring your camera manual). Basic knowledge of how to create, save, open, print, and retrieve documents and files; open/close applications; operate removable media and external storage devices is required.

Setting & Accommodations:

For the week we will be staying at the Residenza Michelangiolo along the Viale Michelangiolo in the quieter Oltr'arno section of Florence. This is a recently renovated private palazzo on a tree-lined residential street near the Arno. The owner still manages the property and makes each person feel like a guest of his family. There are only 11 rooms - large, exquisite, each with new bathroom and kitchenette. A continental Italian breakfast of rolls and coffee can be enjoyed in your room, or we will walk to the bar on the corner to have a cappuccino with the other locals heading off to work.
